Wedding Engagement Rings - Meaning and Symbols
Alas you won the heart of the one you want to marry and are now wearing an engagement ring to announce to the world that wedding bells are just around the corner. You may be so elated that all you think about is the coming wedding. But do you know of the symbolic history behind the engagement ring that you are wearing now? It is rather an impressive one.
Meaning and Symbols of Wedding Engagement Rings
According to the Western cultures, engagement rings are worn on a woman’s left ring finger. This demonstrates that she is engaged to be married. Usually, engagement rings are presented to the woman when the man formally proposes to her. When she wears the ring, she is saying that she has accepted his proposal, thus a pact is made between the couple.
Countries like Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Finland, the engagement rings are worn by both the man and the woman. However, as for the man, the engagement ring is also their wedding ring. In Germany, the engagement rings for both the sexes are made of platinum or gold, and are transferred from the left hand to the right hand after the marriage ceremony. Hence the rings become their wedding rings.
Choosing a Wedding Engagement Ring
An engagement ring is commonly made of valuable material in which a single gem is mounted. The ring comes in many different designs according to its demands. The most preferred gem is the diamond. The famous kinds of engagement rings are those made with platinum, silver, or gold band that consist only a diamond. Diamonds, believed to be the most costly among the gems, are meant to show the seriousness of the man’s desire in marrying the girl.
In actual fact, the inclusion of a diamond into an wedding engagement ring is more of a Western tradition. In several European countries like Denmark, Germany, and Norway, the ring is just a plain band with nothing else. In France, for example, the customarily ring does not include a diamond, but have some kind of gem.
In conclusion, it doesn’t matter where you are from and what design you have on your engagement ring, because the meaning of the ring is still the same – a symbol of love you share with your fiancée. It is certain that when you are wearing an engagement ring, you are definitely looking forward to the day you walk down the aisle.
