Memorable Wedding Reception Favors

One of the first things guests look for when they attend a wedding party are the wedding reception favors. These small gifts are provided as small tokens of appreciation for the guests who attended the ceremony. Largely dependable on the size of and the budget of the bride and groom, the wedding reception favors can be handmade, exceptionally extravagant or something more sedate. The purpose of the favors is so extend the couples’ thanks as well as to offer a memorable reminder for the day.

Wedding reception favors are usually placed on the tables for all in attendance, offered as gratitude. The tradition of supplying favors following a wedding began long ago, typically by royalty and aristocrats, who would place sugar cubes in metal boxes for each guest. At the time, sugar was exceptionally expensive and was meant to show the wealth and status of the families of the bride and groom.

As sugar became less expensive it was replaced with sugar-coated almonds, followed later by candy-coated almonds in a small fabric bag, placed in the tables for the guests. Traditionally, five candy almonds were used as wedding reception favors to represent fertility, wealth, health, happiness and longevity. The candy-coated almonds and the sweet candy coating was to represent the bitter sweet time of being married.

Today, the tradition of giving out wedding reception favors continues, mostly surrounded by the culture of the couple. While some believe a picture of the couple in a frame will suffice, other choose more elaborate wedding reception favors, including metal items engraved with the couples’ names and wedding date. The act of offering favors at a reception has spurred an entire industry to supplement the wedding planning industry.

Many couples continue to use the five candy-coated almonds as wedding reception favors due to their European heritage while others take a more modern approach to the tradition. Small metal intertwined rings, personalized with the wedding invitation are quite popular as are small bottle of wine or champaign. Labels on the bottles can be personalized for the event and enable the couple to participate in the traditional toast.

Throughout the world, wedding reception favors are offered following most weddings and each one is chosen based on the culture in which they live. While food items as favors are becoming more popular, they rarely provide long-lasting memories of the wedding day. In the event that invitations go unanswered, guests are invited to take any extras home with them at the end of the party.
